This small street is a fun walk. Lined with small specialty shops there should be something for everyone. Everything from clothing to woven bags to jewelry and ceramics, Dewi Sita is definitely worth a walk.
Shopping in Ubud can be quite an adventure. With so many different areas in this sprawling village one may wonder where the best shopping is. I would say that where you should shop is determined by how much time you have and what you are looking for. Read on to get the inside information on the best shopping places in Ubud.
Ubud as a village is over 800 years old and is considered by many to be the cultural center of Bali. With culture often comes a tradition of handicrafts which Ubud has in abundance. In actuality many of the handicrafts aren’t produced in Ubud proper but rather in the villages that surround this famous village. There are areas for wood carving, rattan weaving, silver smithing, and many others. But instead of having to run around all over the regency many sellers have brought all the products to you right in Ubud town.
Here are some ideas we have for where the best shopping in Ubud is.
As far as Ubud shopping goes the Ubud market is at the center and is certainly the most well known. This market has gone through major changes in the past handful of years. First the market was completely rebuilt into the behemoth that you see today. Then a massive fire gutted it and it was refurbished.
Ubud Art Market is centrally located on Ubud main road near the North terminus of Monkey Forest road. It is a multi-storey complex of small shops selling a wide range of goods.
So what do they sell? Well, I would say very basic, generic versions of everything. These are tourist trinkets and inexpensive gifts to bring back home. Think of things like inexpensive sarongs, simple wood carvings, simple paintings, clothing, etc. That being said, there are a handful of special shops selling actual high quality things (at higher prices).
And mind you, I don’t mean to speak poorly of Ubud market. If you have to bring lots of things back home and don’t have much time then it would be my #1 suggestion for where to shop in Ubud.
During the time that Ubud Art Market was being reconstructed Kajeng became a popular Ubud shopping area. This quiet street is not lined with small shops selling the same things as Ubud market. There are also a few more boutique shops that have popped up where you might find something more unique. For me a walk down Kajeng makes for a pleasant stroll. There is only light traffic on the road and it can be a nice adventure.
Outside of Ubud village and up the hill a ways is the village of Sanggingan. Traditionally (think early 20th century) this is where the foreign artists hung out. People like Walter Spies and Ari Smits still have the places they lived in kept as mini-museums. It was therefore here (and neighboring Penestanan village) that the Ubud art scene got its start. We are also happy to report that the arts still thrive today.
Sanggingan is an area where you will find a wide range of art galleries and boutique shops. Many of Bali’s old established brands have shops up here. With decent sidewalks and relatively little traffic, Sanggingan is a must visit for those looking for art or a special piece of clothing.
Some of the best shopping in Ubud is located on Monkey Forest Road. There are so many shops selling a wide range of items. While a few of them still sell the basic touristic products, many more niche, higher end shops have opened. This is an area to go if you are looking for something special.

If you have more time and you really want to go for an Ubud shopping deep dive then you might consider driving up Andong road all the way to Tegalalang (check out the rice terraces while you’re there).
In this area you will find everything you find in the Ubud Art Market but much cheaper. The downside is that the shops are spread out over a 5+ km road.
But it’s not just the basic tourist stuff that you can find. There are numerous unique shops up and down this road including many antique shops.
